Developing Self-Control

by Rick Warren

A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls. Proverbs 25:28 (NLT) People with self-control master their moods. They do not let their moods master them. Most of what gets done in the world is accomplished by people who do the right thing even when they don't feel like it: "A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls." (Proverbs 25:28, NLT)

People with self-control watch their words. They put their minds in gear before opening their mouths: "Be careful what you say and protect your life. A careless talker destroys himself." (Proverbs 13:3, TEV)

People with self-control restrain their reactions. How much can you take before you lose your cool? "If you are sensible, you will control your temper. When someone wrongs you, it is a great virtue to ignore it." (Proverbs 19:11, TEV)

People with self-control stick to their schedule. If you don't determine how you will spend your time, then others will decide for you: "Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil." (Ephesians 5:15-16, NIV)

People with self-control manage their money. They learn to live on less than what they make and they invest the difference. The value of a budget is that it tells your money where you want it to go rather than wondering where it went! "In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has." (Proverbs 21:20, NIV)

People with self-control maintain their health. That way they can accomplish more and enjoy their achievements: "Learn to appreciate and give dignity to your body ...." (1 Thessalonians 4:4, MSG)

In what areas do you need to develop for self-control? The disciplines you establish today will determine your success tomorrow. But it takes more than just willpower for lasting self-control. It takes a power greater than yourself: "For the Spirit that God has given us does not make us timid; instead, his Spirit fills us with power, love, and self-control." (2 Timothy 1:7, TEV)

How Good is Good Corporate Governance?

Corporate Governance definition:
The set of processes, customs, policies, laws, and institutions affecting the way a corporation (or company) is directed, administered or controlled.

Corporate governance also includes the relationships among the many stakeholders involved and the goals for which the corporation is governed. The principal stakeholders are the shareholders, management, and the board of directors. Other stakeholders include employees, customers, creditors, suppliers, regulators, and the community at large.
(Source: Wikipedia)

Good Corporate Goverance (GCG), The Big Three Words in corporate world since the collapse of giants corporations in U.S. due to fraudulent activities and financial reporting that may cause hundreds of employees lost their jobs and their pension fund.

It is closely related to a term Whistleblower:

A person who raises a concern about wrongdoing occurring in an organization or body of people, usually this person would be from that same organization (Source: Wikipedia)

Objectives of GCG & Whistleblowing system:

Now, let's take a look what motivates companies to establish this system. It should be noted that this interpretation is purely based on my observation on 2 big companies that implemented GCG and Whistleblowing system in this country.

1. Both companies have a purpose to ensure a clean and transparent operations in the company. This system is proven to help the companies to deter any frauds occur in the companies, which could result a tremendous monetary loss. The fraud can be done internally (employees) or externally (customers, suppliers.

2. By preventing or taking action in response to any fraudulent activities, the companies could gain more profit especially when the written agreement has the provision to penalize the accused as many as 2 times or even 10 times from the calculated loss (this may include interest rates).

3. GCG and Whistleblowing system definitely could boost company's image by raising public confidence in the company's transparency to disclose any wrongdoing that may affect shareholders' profitability.

Movie Review: The Invention of Lying

A comedy movie directed by the co-creator of BBC's The Office, portrays a world where everyone can only tell the truth. Can you imagine how the world would be if everyone is so honest in their opinion? Does it make our world become a better?

In my opinion, the perspective in creating this movie is brilliant. It makes us think about things that never happen in this world and what if that does happen. When you picture yourself in the movie, it seems that Truth is just hurting everyone. People says horrible things about each other. Some people are taking it pretty well or at least it seems so, and some people are deeply hurt. Since the Truth makes most people hurt, Lying is permissible to get what people want.

Overall, the story is entertaining. However, we still need to remember the real substance in life. Everything that happens have positive sides, the Truth that should be told. Of course, telling the bad side of others can still be beneficial. It lets people realize what really happens and what they should do instead of dragging other people to take the wrong path. That makes Truth become a good thing. So does how the movie end (a little bit of  spoiler won't hurt ^.^")

Schmoopsie-Poo!

What a cute word. I always want to use it but the ending made me doubt it. That word comes up in my head while I was chatting with Mr. Brain Reconstructed. The first time I heard it is from Monster Inc.. I wonder what that really means if there is any. Then, I come to the all knowing Google, searching for answer. And....Pop! here goes the answer:

Schmoopsie-poo:
noun. Diminutive, cute loved one; sweetie; poopsie-woopsie; honey-bunny.

Made-up citation:
"I'll be your snuggle-bunny, and I'll be your cuddle-monkey, and I'll be your sex poodle, but I draw the line at being your schmoopsie-poo."

Related terms: schmoopie-poo, poopie-poo, honey-poo, sweety-poo, cutey-poo, wifey-poo, snacky-poo, poo-poo, Yorkie-poo.

Real Friendship

Some people compare how many friends you and others have in social websites such as Facebook, My Space, etc.

Some people go to social gatherings, to parties, or even to church to get new friends.

But what is the true purpose of getting new friends? Expand your social network? Get more business connections? There is nothing wrong in doing those things. The people involved in these activities also don't mind getting to know each other because they get mutual benefit.

We may be popular and surrounded by others. It seems that we won't feel lonely but when we are honest to ourselves, how do we really feel?

Do we have real friends? Genuine friends? True friends? Friends who could support you, encourage you, and pray for you no matter what happens? Just be honest to yourself about how you feel.

God gave friends to apostle Paul when he was at the lowest point of his life. You can ask God to give you a friend too, a real friend. Personally, I am really grateful that I have a circle of friends that support and pray for me when I broke down.

As we are blessed with real friends, we should also learn how to be good friends to others because there are people out there that need our friendship. Just by being a good friend, we can be a blessing for others.

Website Review: Beautiful People

The Jakarta Globe today posts an article about the sexiest website in the world according to CNN. It is called Beautiful People (www.beautifulpeople.com). The website states that the purpose of becoming member is that it makes you easier to find georgeous men and women without the hassle of filtering photos. Plus, you can get party invitations exclusively for members.

Based on the info stated in Jakarta Globe, only 20% of applicants got accepted. Does it even make you more curious about how hard it is and what it takes to become a member, and also what kind of traits that are more favorable than others. It is difficult to sign up as guest due to heavy traffic. The solutions are either you are willing to wait or to sign up as member.  After signing up, you will get confirmation letter telling you that you have 48 hours to be rated by the members of the opposite sex.

First impression, the layout seems nice but somehow after digging further, clicking here and there, many problems are found. Sometimes, it signs out by itself, the default language switches to others, tabs don't work, etc. That is just the nutshell.

Then, check the top 50 women members. The finding is that most of them are showing their skin more than others. They are using their sexuality to attract the opposite sex to give them high rate. This applies to men members as well. The second factor to get rated high is by using high quality photos or touched up photos.

Final conclusion, beauty truly lies in the limited eye of the beholder. The rating is purely based on the outer look. However, if outer look is what you are looking for, this website serves your purpose. Since there are thousands of applicants daily, it makes new applicants harder to be known by the member, who will rate the new applicants.
